Painter Felix Benton will take up residence with Site Service at Nine’s new address, 112 Madison St, spending the time installing work and completing his newest body of work. Using the gallery as an active plane, he'll engage in ongoing conversations with peers and curators throughout the residency.
The residency program supports the development of new work for his forthcoming solo exhibition at Nine with Site Service.
In this presentation, Benton plants x and cultivates y. The paintings' flatness lets the composition slide back and forth between foreground and background. An underlying tension draws you into the underpainting as it surfaces, then pulls you back out to the final image. These are works that never sit still — they succeed almost against their own logic. Paintings that seem built to spread outward instead reach upward. In the garden of x and y, the real harvest may turn out to be z.
Felix Benton (b. 2000, El Paso, TX) is a painter working in Brooklyn, New York. He received a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2023, with a concentration in Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies. Benton has presented solo exhibitions at Do Right Hall in Marfa, Texas, and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in New York, and most recently presented a two-person exhibition at Stump Gallery in Brooklyn. He has participated in group exhibitions throughout Texas, New York, and Rhode Island, and has served as assistant curator at Ballroom Marfa.
